Maintenance is what protects the money you spent on landscaping. The tasks are not complicated, but they need to happen on a rhythm.
Weed before the weeds set seed
Weeding a bed early takes minutes. Weeding it after the weeds have flowered and dropped seed sets you up for months of work. Make a habit of clearing beds while the weeds are still small.
A good mulch layer is the cheapest weed control there is, and it holds moisture in the soil at the same time.
Prune with a purpose
Pruning is not just tidying. It removes dead and diseased growth, opens the plant to light and air, and controls shape before a shrub outgrows its position.
- · Remove dead, damaged and crossing branches first
- · Cut back to a growth point rather than leaving stubs
- · Shape hedges little and often rather than in one heavy cut
- · Use clean, sharp tools to avoid tearing stems
Water deeply, not often
Frequent light watering keeps roots near the surface, where they dry out fastest. Less frequent, deeper watering encourages roots to go down and makes plants far more resilient through dry spells.
Water early in the morning where you can, so less is lost to evaporation.
Look after the soil
Beds that are cropped, cut and cleared season after season slowly lose condition. Topping up with compost and mulch feeds the soil and improves how it holds water.
Build a routine you can keep
Set a realistic interval — weekly, fortnightly or monthly — and stick to it. A short regular visit beats an occasional rescue operation, and problems get caught while they are still small.
If keeping that rhythm is difficult, a scheduled garden maintenance service takes the pressure off entirely.
